EU to strengthen defense cooperation with NATO - EU Commission

The European Union wants to strengthen cooperation with non-EU NATO member states. This includes, for example, Canada, the United Kingdom, Norway, and the United States of America, according to the European Commission.
As noted by the European Commission, the emphasis is on the coherence of efforts of different member states. In particular, one of the goals of the European Union is to support member states in fulfilling their international obligations, including those undertaken by NATO.
To ensure coordination, interstate exchanges are organized with the NATO International Staff.
“Enhanced cooperation with NATO on defense industrial matters is ensured through a dedicated structured dialogue started in 2024,” the European Commission said in its response.
EU and NATO defense cooperation
EU-NATO defense cooperation is based on a strategic partnership aimed at increasing security in Europe and the transatlantic area. Both organizations complement each other: NATO provides collective defense and military capabilities, while the EU focuses on crisis management, peacekeeping missions, and defense industry development.
Since 2022, after the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, cooperation between the EU and NATO has become even closer.
