EU to open accession talks with Ukraine in 2025: Details
The European Union is preparing to open negotiation clusters with Ukraine as part of its EU integration process. The first one is expected to open in early 2025. This was stated by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during a plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, Ukrinform reports.
It is known that further clusters will be opened over the next year.
Von der Leyen stated that Ukraine is making significant progress on its way to EU membership, and this progress should be duly recognized.
She emphasized that if Ukrainians continue to follow these efforts, the EU should be ready to open negotiations on the foundation cluster in early 2025 and open other clusters within the same year.
The President of the European Commission also emphasized the importance of Ukrainians knowing that their efforts and struggles lead to a European future.
Ukraine's accession to the EU
After the official start of accession negotiations on June 25, 2024, the country focused on harmonizing national legislation with European standards and implementing the necessary reforms.
Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal said that Ukraine should be ready to join the EU by the end of 2025. He emphasized that the government is actively working to fulfill the necessary criteria for EU membership.
Speaking about his country's goals during its presidency of the Council of the European Union, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said that the country plans to focus on ensuring an effective pace of the organization's expansion.
