EU to focus on supplies to Ukraine in coming weeks - Ursula von der Leyen
The European Union should speed up the delivery of weapons and ammunition to Ukraine. This issue will be on the agenda in the coming weeks, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen says in a speech at the annual conference of EU diplomats.
According to von der Leyen, Russia's war against Ukraine remains the central crisis for the future of Europe, as well as the biggest crisis in terms of its consequences. The full-scale Russia's invasion of Ukraine will soon be 4 years old, and Vladimir Putin continues to make efforts to force Ukraine's capitulation.
“And then we know what could happen next. Because it has already happened before. He would move on to the next target – just like he did after 2008 and 2014. It is not only the destiny of Ukraine that is at stake. It is Europe's destiny. It is our first priority that we empower Ukraine's resistance,” she emphasized.
According to the President of the European Commission, since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the EU and its member states have provided support to Ukraine of 134 billion euros.
“Thanks to the Ukraine Facility and the G7 loan, we have closed Ukraine's budgetary gap for the entire year of 2025. In parallel, we must speed up the immediate delivery of weapons and ammunition. And this will be at the heart of our work in the coming weeks,” she said.
EU assistance to Ukraine
The European Union has been providing Ukraine with comprehensive support, including military, financial, humanitarian, and political assistance, since the first days of the full-scale Russian invasion. Kyiv has received significant military support packages that include ammunition, armored vehicles, air defense systems, and military training. The EU has also imposed numerous sanctions on Russia aimed at weakening its economic and military capabilities.
Recently, the EU member state Croatia announced that it is preparing to allocate the 12th package of military and technical assistance to Ukraine.
