EU signals retaliation after Trump imposes 30% tariffs on European goods

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen responded to US President Donald Trump's decision to impose 30% tariffs on European goods. She said the EU will continue working on an agreement with the US, but also warned of "countermeasures."
"A 30% tariff on EU exports would hurt businesses, consumers, and patients on both sides of the Atlantic. We will continue working towards an agreement by August 1. At the same time, we are ready to safeguard EU interests on the basis of proportionate countermeasures," von der Leyen wrote.
As a reminder, on July 12, Trump announced 30% tariffs on all goods imported to the US from the European Union and Mexico. He said the tariffs are meant to tackle a trade deficit.
Earlier, Bloomberg reported that the trade deal between the US and the EU is on the brink of collapse, as the sides have failed to agree on tariffs for agricultural products and automobiles.
Earlier this week, Trump announced new tariffs on several countries, including Japan, South Korea, Canada, and Brazil. He also announced a 50% tariff on copper. Trump's tariffs even affected Moldova. Ukraine itself faced a standard 10% tariff.
