EU ambassadors plan to approve a major new package of sanctions against Russia. This could happen tomorrow, October 7, Reuters reports.
New EU sanctions against Russia
EU ambassadors are expected to approve around 1,650 new sanctions listings against Russia on Wednesday. Most of them target the country’s military-industrial complex, EU diplomats said on Tuesday.
The package, proposed by the EU’s foreign policy body, the European External Action Service, would be the largest since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
After approval by the ambassadors, the lists will be sent to EU foreign ministers on October 12 for final approval.
Who is on the lists
Around 1,570 of the new listings target organizations and individuals linked to Russia’s military-industrial complex. More than half of them focus on missile production.
The EU currently has just over 3,000 designations in its main Russia sanctions regulation.
The measures include a travel ban and restrictions on transactions with the EU, as well as asset freezes.
The latest combined EU package, the 21st, was adopted in July this year.
Earlier, RBC-Ukraine reported that European ambassadors were set to remove two oligarchs from the EU’s sanctions lists against Belarus on October 7. They are Russian businessman Mikail Gutseriev and Belarusian businessman Viktar Shautsou.
In addition, the EU officially extended its personal sanctions. However, it removed Russian oligarchs Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman from the sanctions list.
