EU responds to Trump’s demand to abandon Russian oil and gas

The European Union is already gradually abandoning Russian fossil fuels, as US President Donald Trump demanded last weekend, reports The Guardian citing European Commission spokeswoman Paula Pinho.
“Phasing out of Russian fossil fuels is something that we have been doing and are doing actively for a number already of years, since the beginning of the war, with a very clear roadmap, with now even a clear legislative proposal in order to phase out the remaining gas still entering the EU,” she said.
The EU is actively working on implementing this plan, and a clear mechanism has already been defined for how this will happen.
Pinho also confirmed that the 19th package of sanctions against Russia is still in work and has not yet been presented to member states.
EU abandons Russian gas
Earlier, the European Commission officially submitted a draft law for consideration, which provides for a phased rejection of Russian gas and oil imports by the end of 2027.
After the start of a full-scale war in Ukraine, the energy dependence on Russia became the key issue for the EU, and Russian fuel began to be gradually squeezed out of the European market.
According to media reports, since the start of the invasion, the share of Russian gas in EU imports has fallen from over 40% to around 19%.
A week ago, Trump once again called on the European Union to stop buying Russian oil. In his opinion, this is essential for potential US sanctions against Russia to be effective.
