EU plans diplomatic ties with new Syrian leadership
The European Union aims to establish diplomatic contacts with Syria's new leadership, now led by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), The Guardian reports.
Following the ousting of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, a senior EU official stated that the bloc is looking to establish diplomatic contacts with Syria's new leadership "soon".
"What we are now thinking is to establish contacts, to pass messages about our expectations," the anonymous official revealed, adding that these efforts would take place at a "working level."
The fall of Assad's regime
Back in 2011, Syrians protested against Assad's regime, demanding greater political freedoms and an end to autocracy. However, Assad’s dictatorship, supported by Russian President Vladimir Putin, attempted to crush the uprising with force.
Recently, Syrian rebels succeeded in toppling Assad’s regime. Just last week, the President fled the country following a lightning advance led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and its allies.
