EU Parliament calls for more donations for stable supply of weapons to Ukraine
The European Parliament welcomes civil society initiatives in EU countries that help to ensure a steady supply of arms to Ukraine. The EU is called upon to encourage such initiatives, according to the European Parliament resolution.
The European Parliament condemns Russia's aggression against Ukraine, as well as its attacks on energy and civilian infrastructure.
Strasbourg calls on the European Commission to engage in strategic communication in member states to explain the importance of Ukraine's defense for wider stability in Europe and to ensure that EU citizens are well informed about the importance of this assistance to Ukraine's sovereignty and peace and security in the EU.
In addition, the resolution calls on EU citizens to donate more to help Ukraine ensure the stability of arms supplies.
"The European Parliament welcomes and applauds the public effort and citizen crowdfunding initiatives in some Member States to ensure a steady supply of weapons for Ukraine; further encourages similar initiatives across the EU to foster solidarity and public involvement in this critical cause," the resolution says.
In addition, the European Parliament calls on EU countries to immediately lift restrictions on the use of Western weapons systems provided to Ukraine against legitimate military targets in Russia.
The resolution emphasizes that the restrictions prevent Ukraine from fully exercising its right to self-defense under public international law.
The resolution will be voted on at the plenary session of the parliament on Thursday, September 19. In the document, MPs also express their deep regret at the reduction in military aid from member states.
EU aid for Ukraine
The European Union has imposed more than 10 packages of economic sanctions against Russia and Belarus since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
In addition, individual member states have been providing military assistance to the Ukrainian army, and the EU has been funding part of the assistance provided. The EU has also created funds to support Ukraine.
Last year, the EU also launched an initiative to provide the Ukrainian army with artillery ammunition. It was planned that by March 2024, EU countries would provide Ukraine with one million shells. However, the supply of ammunition has been delayed. At the end of August, it was reported that the EU had prepared 700,000 shells for Ukraine out of the promised million.
