EU leaders agree to annual debate on €50 bln aid to Ukraine - Reuters
European Union leaders are proposing annual debates on the planned €50 billion aid package for Ukraine to overcome resistance from Hungary, according to Reuters.
The aid is intended to cover Ukraine's needs for the years 2024-2027. Hungary insists on an annual review with a veto right, a stance opposed by other EU members.
In the new version of the summit's conclusions, EU leaders will hold annual debates on the aid package based on reports from the European Commission.
"The European Council will hold a debate each year on the implementation of the facility with a view to providing guidance on the EU approach towards the situation stemming from Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine," the draft confinement of January 30 read.
EU Summit
The main topic of the summit in Brussels on February 1 will be an attempt to reach an agreement on a €50 billion financial aid package for Ukraine over four years, which Hungary blocked at the previous summit in December.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has already stated that he is willing to approve the package, but with the condition that it is reviewed annually and approved unanimously.
