The EU remains unwavering in its commitment to achieving a just and lasting peace for Ukraine. At the same time, any peace agreement must not contain the seeds of a new conflict, states European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
According to von der Leyen, she held consultations with partners from the Coalition of the Willing during an extremely intensive week of peace negotiations.
“Despite the pressure, we remain absolutely firm in our goal: achieving a just and sustainable peace for Ukraine. Sustainable means that any peace agreement must not contain the seeds of future conflict and destabilise the broader European security architecture,” the EC President wrote.
She also added that discussing security guarantees for Ukraine is important.
“We also discussed the need for robust and credible security guarantee. I updated leaders on our work to secure financing for Ukraine for 2026-2027,” von der Leyen said.
The official noted that proposals for Ukraine’s financing are already on the table, and the sense of urgency is obvious to everyone.
“The coming week will be decisive,” the President of the European Commission concluded.
Peace negotiations in Ukraine and security guarantees
On December 11, members of the Coalition of the Willing met online to discuss security guarantees for Ukraine, as well as steps of the US peace plan, which has been repeatedly revised during negotiations in Geneva, Florida, and elsewhere.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also reported on talks with the US side regarding security guarantees for Ukraine, which, according to him, will be presented shortly.
The head of state emphasizes the importance of security guarantees to ensure that history does not repeat itself, referring to the violation of the Budapest Memorandum, when Russia invaded Ukraine despite the agreements.
After several rounds of negotiations between Ukraine, Europe, the US, and Russia, US leader Donald Trump indicated that he would not waste time on meetings that are meaningless. The White House stated that it is ready to send US representatives to negotiations only if a peace agreement with Russia is concluded.
