The European Union has extended sanctions against Russia for another six months but removed one individual from the list, the press service of the European Council reports.

As reported, today the European Council decided to extend the restrictive measures directed against persons responsible for undermining or threatening the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine for another six months – until March 15, 2026.

The current restrictive measures include a ban on entry of individuals into the territory of the EU or transit through it, freezing of assets, and a ban on providing funds or other economic resources to persons and organizations included in the list.

It is noted that the sanctions will continue to apply to more than 2,500 individuals and organizations, which are a response to the ongoing unjustified and unprovoked military aggression of Russia against Ukraine.

At the same time, in the context of the sanctions review, the Council also decided not to renew the listing of one individual and to remove one deceased person from the list.

EU sanctions against Russia

The EU has already approved 18 packages of sanctions against Russia after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and is working on the 19th package of measures.

The European Union has imposed sanctions on more than 2,500 individuals and legal entities from Russia, which include the country's leadership, high-ranking officials, businessmen and oligarchs, propagandists, as well as employees and companies of the military, space, chemical and energy sectors.

According to media reports, the European Commission is preparing to present the 19th package of sanctions against Russia on Wednesday, September 17.

Today the EU countries agreed to extend sanctions against Russia.

The EU continues the current sanctions every six months, and this requires a unanimous decision of the 27 member states.

However, recently Hungary has been obstructing the automatic extension of sanctions, after Prime Minister Viktor Orbán felt support from US President Donald Trump.

In addition, the EU estimates Moscow's losses from international sanctions at 450 billion dollars since 2022.
