The Council of the European Union has extended economic sanctions against Russia for another year. The restrictions will remain in force at least until July 31, 2027, according to the EU Council press service.
" The decision follows the European Council on 18-19 June 2026, where EU leaders agreed to extend the economic sanctions against Russia for twelve months," the statement says.
The Council recalled that the first economic sanctions against Russia were introduced in 2014. After the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, these measures were significantly expanded. Since then, the European bloc has adopted 20 sanctions packages against Russia.
The restrictive measures target key sectors of the Russian economy, including trade, finance, energy, and dual-use technologies.
The sanctions include a ban on the maritime import of Russian crude oil and certain petroleum products into Europe. The restrictions apply to a number of financial institutions, crypto service providers in Russia and third countries, and also block Russian propaganda media from operating within the EU.
"The EU will keep the current measures in place and stands ready to take additional measures as long as the Russian Federation continues its illegal actions and violations of the fundamental rules of international law, including, in particular, the prohibition on the use of force,” the EU Council stated.
The European Commission has unveiled details of the 21st sanctions package, which includes new restrictions on Russian companies and citizens, including measures related to entry into European countries.
In addition, the sanctions will cover Russia’s financial sector, cryptocurrency transactions, and trade activities. For the first time, Russia’s fishing industry is also expected to be included in the sanctions list.
