EU member states' ambassadors will discuss Russia's war against Ukraine today, August 16. This comes against the backdrop of a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, according to Ansa.

The day before, the EU announced an ambassadors' meeting. It will be an informal session of Coreper 2 — the Committee of Permanent Representatives.

The meeting of the special representatives will take place online. It is scheduled to begin on Saturday, August 16, at 9:30 a.m. Brussels time (10:30 a.m. Kyiv time).

The agenda focuses on one issue: Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and an exchange of views. Media, citing European diplomats, report that ambassadors will discuss the outcomes of the Trump-Putin meeting in Alaska.

Trump and Putin meeting

US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin met in Alaska the day before.

The talks were held in a "three-on-three" format and lasted nearly three hours. Although both sides described the conversation positively, a joint lunch after the meeting was canceled.

After the talks, Trump and Putin held a joint press conference, but journalists were not allowed to ask questions. More details about the meeting are available in RBC-Ukraine’s coverage.

Trump said that no agreements on Ukraine had been reached, but "some progress" had been made. On his way to Washington, the US president spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and NATO leaders.

Zelenskyy announced that he will travel to Washington on Monday, August 18, to discuss the war with Trump.
