Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán criticized the London summit, calling for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine. However, European Council President António Costa rejected these proposals, emphasizing that peace must be just and sustainable, The Guardian reports.

Viktor Orbán criticized the EU summit held in London and said that European leaders decided to continue the war instead of choosing peace, calling the decision bad, dangerous and wrong.

Orbán's statements were made against the backdrop of discussions on support for Ukraine in its war with Russia. Orbán sent a letter to the President of the European Council, António Costa, demanding that immediate negotiations be launched to achieve a ceasefire in Ukraine.

In addition, Orbán, together with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, proposed to veto the European Council's conclusions on plans for Ukraine.

However, during his visit to Moldova, António Costa, President of the European Council, showed little concern for these calls, strongly rejecting the ceasefire proposals on Orbán's terms.

He stated that the European Union is a project of peace, but peace without proper security and defense is an illusion.

“The European Union is a project of peace, and a project of peace means that security and defense are necessarily a priority, because peace without defense is an illusion,” Costa emphasized.

He also added that no one wants peace more than Ukrainians themselves, and the EU supports them in their quest for a lasting peace, but it is not just a ceasefire that only gives Russia time to rebuild.

“We want a just and lasting peace,” Costa emphasized.

Recently, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán sent a letter to European Council President António Costa calling for direct negotiations between the EU and Russia to achieve a ceasefire in Ukraine.

Orbán also proposed to block the adoption of the European Council's conclusions on Ukraine.
