The European Union has approved the 17th package of sanctions against Russia. The list of restrictions includes 189 more vessels of Moscow's shadow fleet, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen says.

"I welcome the agreement on our 17th sanctions package against Russia. We are further restricting access to battlefield technology. And we have listed an additional 189 shadow fleet vessels to target Russia's energy exports," the European Commission President said.

Ursula von der Leyen added that the full-scale war in Ukraine must end, and the EU, in turn, will continue to put pressure on Russia.

Sanctions against Russia

After the start of Russia's full-scale invasion, Ukraine's allies imposed sanctions on Russia. The EU, the United States, Britain, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and other countries joined in imposing restrictions.

The sanctions covered the financial sector, including the disconnection of many Russian banks from the SWIFT system, freezing of assets of the Central Bank of Russia, a ban on exports of high-tech products, as well as personal sanctions against officials, oligarchs, and propagandists. In addition, the restrictions affected the energy, aviation, transportation, defense, and trade sectors.

Today, it became known that the EU countries are planning to reach a preliminary agreement on the 17th package of sanctions against Russia.
