EU approves additional €6.1 billion in defense funding for Ukraine

The European Commission has approved an additional €6.1 billion in funding for Ukraine. The money will be used to purchase air and missile defense systems, missiles, ammunition, and radars, according to Reuters.
New aid package
On Monday, August 24, the European Commission approved an additional €6.1 billion in financial assistance for Ukraine. The funds will be used to purchase new defense systems.
The package includes air and missile defense systems, missiles, ammunition and radar equipment.
What is known about the funding
The new package adds to the EU’s previously approved €16 billion procurement plan for Ukraine. Of that amount, €8.35 billion has already been disbursed.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the additional assistance is needed as Russia intensifies its attacks.
“As Russia intensifies its attacks, we are stepping up to help Ukraine protect its people and defend its skies. Europe stands with Ukraine and we will deliver what it needs, when it needs it,” she said.
Von der Leyen recently said Russia continues to strike Ukraine’s civilian population despite its military setbacks, calling strengthening Ukraine’s air and ballistic missile defenses the “most urgent priority.”
