On Wednesday, October 2, European Union ambassadors approved a new sanctions regime aimed at countering hybrid threats from Russia. The new mechanism will come into effect next week, according to Radio Liberty correspondent Rikard Jozwiak.

"The new EU sanctions mechanism targetting Russia's hybrid actions now adopted by EU ambassadors. Enters into force next week," he wrote.

Earlier, the journalist reported that the EU initially planned to introduce a general sanctions regime but ultimately decided to focus on Russian hybrid threats. Currently, no specific names are included in the sanctions list, but they are expected to be added in the future.

Sanctions against Russian media and propagandists

The European Union has imposed numerous sanctions on Russia in response to its invasion of Ukraine. These measures cover various sectors and are aimed at exerting economic pressure on Russia to force it to halt military actions.

In early September, the United States accused Russia of election interference and imposed new sanctions. Among those targeted was Margarita Simonyan, editor-in-chief of RT (Russia Today).

On September 13, the US imposed sanctions on the Russian media group Rossiya Segodnya (Russia Today - ed.) and its general director Dmitry Kiselyov, who is also a well-known propagandist.

Additionally, the US introduced further sanctions against the Russian channel RT, which is reported to have ties with Kremlin intelligence.
