The European Union has allocated €148 million for humanitarian aid to Ukraine and projects in Moldova for Ukrainian refugees. The total amount of EU humanitarian aid has reached 1.1 billion euros, according to the European Commission.

“As Russia's war of aggression continues to devastate Ukraine, approximately 12.7 million people are in need of urgent assistance,” the report says.

In particular, 140 million euros have been allocated for humanitarian projects in Ukraine. The funding will be used to provide emergency assistance, including food, shelter, clean water, healthcare, and winter protection. The key priorities are to support vulnerable populations in the war-affected regions of eastern and southern Ukraine.

In addition, €8 million has been allocated for humanitarian projects in Moldova. The support will focus on assisting Ukrainian refugees and host Moldovan communities.

Commissioner for Preparedness, Crisis Management, and Equality Aja Labib will visit Ukraine on January 13 to support the EU's critical assistance efforts. During the visit, Labib is expected to meet with key Ukrainian leaders, including President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and senior officials, to discuss urgent humanitarian issues and the strategic allocation of EU assistance. She will also meet with beneficiaries of EU humanitarian assistance and local partners.

Before she arrived in Kyiv, Commissioner Labib had already visited the EU Medevac center in Rzeszów, which is assisting the Civil Protection Mechanism with the medical evacuation of seriously ill patients from Ukraine and neighboring countries. Around 4000 patients have been transferred to European hospitals for treatment since the system was established in March 2022.

Since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the EU has coordinated its largest operation under the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, delivering more than 150,000 tons of in-kind assistance to Ukraine. The EU has also sent assistance from its rescEU stockpile, including power generators, medical equipment, temporary shelters, and water purification plants to Ukraine.
