EU accuses Russia of historical falsification: European Parliament prepares resolution
The European Parliament is actively fighting Russia's disinformation campaigns. During the debate in Strasbourg on Dec. 17, MEPs discussed a resolution on Russian historical manipulations, which will be put to a vote in January, reports DW.
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas says Russia uses distortion of historical facts as one of the key elements of hybrid warfare.
She also emphasizes that such campaigns are designed to weaken support for Ukraine, infiltrate European democratic institutions, and destroy the unity of society.
Polish MEP from the Conservative group Arkadiusz Mularczyk drew attention to the fact that the Kremlin was deliberately swapping the roles of victim and aggressor.
“Poland is well aware of these mechanisms. For decades after the Second World War, Poland was a victim of distortion of history, symbolized by the Katyn massacre - the murder of about 22,000 Polish officers, for which the Soviet Union tried to shift the responsibility to others,” he said.
Lithuanian MEP Rasa Juknevičienė compared Russia's current policy to Soviet repressions, emphasizing that the Kremlin uses manipulation of history to justify its aggressive war against Ukraine.
Socialist MEP from Croatia Tonino Picula said that they must fight disinformation from Russia.
“The best way to combat disinformation, besides exposing it, is to respond to it with concrete actions to help Ukraine as much as necessary,” he said.
Among the key recommendations of the European Parliament are exposing disinformation, supporting independent media, and intensifying the work of special services such as the East StratCom Task Force.
Lithuanian MEP Vytenis Andriukaitis called for equating Putin's ideology with Mussolini's fascist regime and Germany's Nazi regime.
The EU plans to impose sanctions against Russia for disinformation.
The EU also adopted the 15th package of sanctions against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.
