Estonia introduces fines for owners of cars with Russian license plates
Starting from today, Estonia introduces fines for owners of vehicles with Russian license plates. Beginning March 13, drivers of cars with Russian license plates may be fined up to 400 euros, reports ERR.
"Police will pay attention to cars with Russian license plates. If the car is not re-registered, it is a violation punishable by a fine of up to 100 penalty units or 400 euros," Major of Police Andres Kirsing announced.
On September 13, 2023, the Estonian government banned the entry of cars with Russian registration plates into the country. Owners were given six months to re-register their vehicles.
According to reports, in 2023, 83 Russian cars were registered in Estonia. In January and February 2024, another 13 cars were registered. In case of registering a car or exporting it from the country, drivers must pay taxes and customs duties in any case.
Ban on entry of cars with Russian registration plates
Earlier, it was reported that on September 13, 2023, Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia announced that, following clarifications from the European Commission regarding sanctions, they would no longer admit cars with Russian registration plates onto their territory.
Thus, upon arrival at the border, if a car with Russian registration plates is detected, the driver and passengers will be required to return to Russia or they may be allowed to cross the border without the car, which could be confiscated.
Recently in Lithuania, owners and drivers of cars with Russian registration plates were again warned about the permissible period of stay for such vehicles that are not registered in the country or the European Union.
Yesterday, on March 12, it became known that Lithuanian customs officers detained the first passenger car with Russian registration plates, which may now be handed over to Ukraine.
