Estonian company Frankenburg has developed a compact missile called Mark 1, which is capable of effectively countering Russian drones. It is only 65 cm long, according to The Telegraph.
"We do not apologize for producing weapons. And we are not afraid to say that we produce them to destroy Russian long-range drones. This will be the most needed type of armament in the Western world over the next five to ten years," said Kusti Salm, the former top civil servant at Estonia’s Ministry of Defense.
According to him, missiles in Western defense arsenals are usually refined: rare, expensive, and powerful. But missiles against drones should be simply "good enough."
It is noted that the missile can fly up to 2 km; it will have difficulty operating in the heat of a desert or the cold of the Arctic Circle.
During tests, a balance was achieved between the drive for cheap components and the overall accuracy, which the company hopes to raise to 90 percent — it is currently about 56 percent.
The developers do not disclose the missile’s price, but emphasize that it costs roughly one-tenth of existing air-defense missile systems. The chief engineer is Andreas Bappert, who led the development of the Iris-T air-defense system.
Counter-drone measures in Ukraine
Earlier, Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal announced a significant increase in the production of means to counter Russian aerial attacks. According to him, Ukraine will soon reach a level of one thousand interceptor drones per day.
Ukraine already has interceptor drones in service that are capable of effectively combating Russian drones, including those equipped with jet engines, such as the Iranian Shaheds."
In addition, Ukrainian engineers and companies are actively working on the development of specialized interceptor drones to fight Russian KABs (guided aerial bombs). It is reported that Ukrainian specialists have already created cheap and effective interceptor drones that have successfully destroyed hundreds of enemy Shaheds.
