Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan plans to organize a meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Istanbul.

Erdoğan recalled that Ukrainian and Russian delegations met this week at the Çırağan Palace. The event was hosted by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.

Before the visit to Çırağan, Ukrainian officials met with the Turkish leader in Ankara. Erdoğan also held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"At the next stage, possibly even within this week, we will try once again to hold negotiations with Mr. Putin, as well as with Mr. Trump, in an effort to bring these leaders (Putin and Zelenskyy – ed.) together in Istanbul," he added.

How Turkish media presented Erdoğan’s quote

Earlier, the Hurriyet newspaper mistakenly reported that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was allegedly planning to organize a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Istanbul. However, in reality, Erdoğan was referring to a possible meeting between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy — this was the proposal he actually made.

Notably, during negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, Ukrainian officials proposed organizing a meeting involving all four leaders — Zelenskyy, Putin, Erdoğan, and Trump.

The Ukrainian head of state has emphasized that peace can only be achieved through a meeting at the leadership level, since all key decisions in Russia are made by Putin.
