Ending war in Ukraine is one of Trump’s main goals – Politico

US President Donald Trump is "optimistic" about the possibility of achieving peace in Ukraine following a successful hostage exchange in the Middle East, Politico reports.
A White House official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the outlet that after the success in the Middle East, the Trump administration is filled with hope for ending the war in Ukraine.
"President Trump has long expressed his desire to end the war between Russia and Ukraine, just like he freed the hostages and ended the war between Israel and Hamas," he emphasized.
The White House official stressed that Russia must be motivated to come to the negotiating table by its military and economic situation.
"As the President stated, the war hasn’t been going well for Russia, whose economy is in shambles and who continue to lose thousands of lives to gain 'virtually no land.' If they were smart, they would more urgently pursue a deal to end the war," he noted.
According to him, Trump "remains optimistic" and believes that he will be able to get both sides to "stop the senseless killing."
The outlet notes that US President’s special envoy Steve Witkoff told foreign counterparts about three main goals of Trump’s foreign policy. These include ending the conflict in Gaza, ending the war between Russia and Ukraine, and concluding a new nuclear deal with Iran.
"They recognized that Gaza was going to be the simplest of the three. But they’re not giving up on the others. If anything, there’s a sense that success will lead to more success," a Politico source stressed.
It is noted that Trump’s success in the Middle East has "bolstered his diplomatic confidence," but so far, Russia has largely not responded to his peace efforts.
Yesterday, October 14, Trump said he does not understand why Russian President Vladimir Putin continues the war in Ukraine.
According to the US President, the Russian leader is entering the fourth year of a war "he should have won in a week."
Earlier, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that the total combat losses of the aggressor state since the beginning of the full-scale invasion in 2022 amount to about 1,125,150 personnel.
