Elon Musk's xAI makes Grok chatbot open-source to compete with ChatGPT
AI startup by American billionaire Elon Musk - xAI - is set to release the chatbot Grok this week. It will be open-source, and compete with OpenAI's ChatGPT, according to Reuters, Musk on X.
"This week, xAI will open source Grok," Musk wrote on X.
This move may provide the public with free access to experiment with the underlying code technology, integrate xAI with companies like Meta and France's Mistral, both of which have open-source AI models.
"Google has also released an AI model called Gemma that outside developers can potentially fashion according to their needs," Reuters reports.
According to the media, technological investors have been debating about open-sourcing in AI since Musk filed the lawsuit against the ChatGPT developer.
"While open-sourcing technology can help speed up innovations, some experts have warned that open-source AI models could be used by terrorists to create chemical weapons or even develop a conscious super-intelligence beyond human control," the media says.
At last year's AI Safety Summit in the UK, Musk said he wanted to create a "third-party referee" that could oversee companies developing AI and raise alarms if they have concerns.
In search of alternatives to OpenAI and Google, Musk launched xAI last year to create, citing his words "maximum truth-seeking AI." In December, the startup launched Grok for Premium+ X subscribers.
