In the Russian city of Ukhta in the Komi Republic, a Lukoil oil refinery came under a drone attack early this morning. Several explosions were reported in the city, followed by a fire, according to Astra.

According to eyewitness footage, the target was the Ukhta oil refinery, Lukoil-Ukhtaneftepererabotka. Thick black smoke was seen rising from the impact site.

Local authorities reportedly evacuated the Yarmarok shopping center, and air raid sirens were heard throughout the city. An air alert had been declared in the region earlier, and temporary flight restrictions were introduced at Ukhta airport.

What's known about the Ukhta refinery

The refinery was founded in 1933 and has been part of Lukoil since 1999. It processes crude from local fields in the Timan-Pechora basin. Most of the raw materials are delivered via the Usa–Ukhta trunk pipeline, with additional volumes supplied through the 65-kilometer Tebuk–Ukhta pipeline.

In 2020, the refinery processed about 2 million tons of oil. Heavy crude from the Yarega field is transported by rail tank cars. Refined products are also shipped by rail.

Strikes on Russian oil refineries

On the night of February 11, Ukraine’s Defense Forces struck the Volgograd oil refinery in Russia and carried out a series of attacks on military facilities in temporarily occupied territories.

Earlier, on January 26, Ukrainian forces targeted infrastructure at the Slavyansk-on-Kuban refinery, which has a potential annual processing capacity of 4 million tons of oil.

On January 1, Ukraine’s Defense Forces hit the Ilsky refinery in Russia’s Krasnodar region, with the General Staff reporting drone strikes followed by a fire.
