Drone, ballistic, and cruise missile terror: Everything about Kyiv overnight attack

On the night of July 10, Russian forces launched a combined attack on Kyiv, using drones and various types of missiles. The strike resulted in damage across the city, fires, heavy smoke, as well as casualties and fatalities.

When strikes occurred
Starting from 01:03 AM Kyiv time, an air raid alert was declared in Kyiv. At this time, the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine detected drones in the Kyiv region, and the Kyiv Regional Military Administration reported the operation of air defense systems.
By 01:12 AM Kyiv time, the work of air defense could be heard in the capital. This was followed by explosions. After a short interval, a new wave of explosions occurred and continued almost nonstop until around 4 AM Kyiv time.
Around 02:28 AM Kyiv time, the Air Force began informing Ukrainians about a high-speed target approaching Kyiv. Monitoring channels indicated it was likely a ballistic missile. After this announcement, loud explosions were heard in Kyiv.
However, the missile strike did not stop there. Around 4 AM Kyiv time, the military reported a group of cruise missiles also heading toward Kyiv. At approximately 04:16 AM Kyiv time, sounds resembling missile flyovers were heard, followed by explosions.
Consequences of strike on Kyiv
The aftermath of the strike by Russian forces was recorded in six districts of the capital, Shevchenkivskyi, Darnytskyi, Solomianskyi, Holosiivskyi, Podilskyi, and Obolonskyi.
Shevchenkivskyi district
Initial consequences were recorded in the Shevchenkivskyi district. Early reports spoke of hits on both residential and non-residential buildings, debris falling on rooftops, and near gas stations.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported on the debris hits. He stated there was a fire in a residential building top floor, another building was on fire, as well as a gas station.
"Rescue workers are working in a residential building where a fire broke out on the top floor due to falling debris. Debris also fell at several other addresses. A fire was recorded at one of them. All services are on-site," the mayor clarified at 03:22 AM Kyiv time.
An hour later, the head of the Shevchenkivskyi district administration, Oleksandr Sazanovych, reported significant damage to civilian infrastructure.
"Residential buildings were damaged - rooftops, upper floors, facades, and interiors. There were also numerous UAV debris impacts on non-residential buildings," the report said.
He added that there were three reported injuries in the district.
Darnytskyi district
In the Darnytskyi district, there were reports of debris falling into a residential courtyard, fires at a gas station, and at garages. Klitschko also said there was a fire in a residential building.
"As a result of UAV debris falling, a fire broke out in garages and at a gas station. Debris also fell into the courtyard of a residential building," he wrote later.
Solomianskyi district
In the Solomianskyi district, debris falling caused a fire in a non-residential building. Debris also fell at another location.
Klitschko reported that a medical team was dispatched to this area.
Other districts
In the Holosiivskyi district, debris from drones caused a truck to catch fire. In Podilskyi, debris fell on non-residential premises.
According to Kyiv Military Administration head Tymur Tkachenko, debris also fell in the Obolonskyi district.
No further detailed damage was reported in these districts at the time.
Casualties and injured
The first injury was reported at 02:49 AM Kyiv time in the Solomianskyi district. Soon after, a second injured person was reported.
According to the latest information, the number of injured has risen to 13. Two people have been reported killed.
Authorities' request to residents
Toward the morning, Tkachenko urged residents to close their windows due to smoke in the city.
"After returning home from shelters, close your windows. There is a lot of smoke. I am in contact with district heads. The situation is under control. A lot of work lies ahead. I’ll provide updates throughout the day on the response efforts," he said.
