US President Donald Trump is offering migrants the option to voluntarily leave the country with the possibility of returning in the future. However, not all migrants will have the chance to return, according to CNN.

The US President stated that the updated policy of his administration regarding self-deportation (the voluntary return of migrants to their home countries) allows certain individuals the possibility of re-entering the US in the future.

However, he also noted that those who refuse to take advantage of this procedure may lose the opportunity to return permanently.

"We’re going to get them a beautiful flight back to where they came from and have a period of time and if they make it, we’re going to work with them so that maybe someday — with a little work — they can come back in if they’re good people," the president told reporters in the Oval Office.

Trump emphasized that this opportunity will only be available to those individuals whom the administration considers to be beneficial and desirable for the country.

"If they’re the kind of people that we want in our company. Industrious people that could love our country. And if they’re not, they won’t," Trump stressed.

Migrant self-deportation program

Donald Trump announced the migrant self-deportation program back in mid-April. He stated that the government would provide volunteers with a stipend and a plane ticket for their departure from the country, and did not rule out the possibility of migrants returning if they behave well.

On Monday, May 5, the US Department of Homeland Security announced the launch of the self-deportation program. Migrants who voluntarily return to their home countries will receive a $1,000 stipend. The first lucky individual to benefit from this program was a citizen of Honduras.

The Washington Post reported that the Trump administration plans to deport 1 million migrants annually. However, several factors may prevent these plans from being fully realized.
