Doctors dispel 5 new medical myths that harm health
Medical myths contribute to self-treatment and prolonged illnesses, according to the Instagram page of Ukrainian neurologist Anastasia Rakhnianska. Doctors from various fields have debunked popular medical claims that people should not believe.
Erosion needs to be cauterized
Obstetrician-gynecologist Anhelina Ostrovska shared that one of the most common myths in her field is that cervical erosion needs to be cauterized or frozen.
However, in reality, erosion is the ectopia of the cylindrical epithelium, and it is a normal condition of the cervix.
Any back pain is related to discs
Neurologist Anastasia Rakhnianska explained that people often mistakenly believe that any back pain is related to intervertebral disc problems, hernias, and protrusions.
In most cases, back pain is nonspecific and related to the soft tissues surrounding the spine, such as muscles, ligaments, and tendons.
Therefore, it is important to consult a doctor to get an accurate diagnosis.
Prostate massage treats
According to Benedykt Gavrylyshyn, this is another widespread medical myth that should not be believed.
He noted that prostate massage is only used for diagnostic purposes and not for treatment.
Children were healthier in the past
A common saying is that children used to be much healthier in the past, without all the treatments and vaccinations.
Pediatrician Anna Kushnir explained that over the past 200 years, child mortality rates have decreased from 40% to 3%, thanks to effective prevention and treatment of diseases that were once considered fatal.
Frequent use of antibiotics for ARVI
"The most common myth I encounter in my therapeutic practice is the use of antibiotics for every case of ARVI," said therapist Maria Tymchenko.
In reality, colds caused by viruses cannot be treated with antibiotics, as antibiotics are designed to fight bacteria.
Influenza, ARVI, and other respiratory diseases are caused by viruses, not bacteria.
