Ukrainian defenders today, February 23, destroyed the Russian long-range radar detection aircraft A-50U. It began to lose altitude near the city of Yeysk, according to the Defense Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine on Telegram.

In reconnaissance, it was noted that the "valuable Russian aircraft" was shot down in cooperation with the Ukrainian Air Force over the Azov Sea.

The Defense Intelligence of Ukraine also showcased photos of the Russian aircraft's final route, which indicate that it flew over the Krasnodar Krai.

"The sudden decrease in speed and altitude of the downed A-50U aircraft was recorded near the city of Yeysk (in the Krasnodar Krai of the Russian Federation)," specified the military intelligence.

What is known about the A-50U

The Ukrainian intelligence clarified that the A-50U is a new upgraded version of the aircraft.

Such an airborne command post was used by the Russians for long-range radar detection, control, and guidance for strikes on Ukraine with missiles from strategic aviation.

"The downing of the A-50U is another serious blow to the potential and capabilities of terrorist Moscow," the statement said.

The cost of the destroyed aircraft is $350 million.

Today, February 23, sources of RBC-Ukraine in the Armed Forces reported that a Russian A-50 aircraft was shot down over the Azov Sea. This is the second A-50 that the Ukrainian Armed Forces have destroyed since the beginning of the war.

Later, the information about the aircraft's losses was confirmed by the Commander of the Ukrainian Air Force, Mykola Oleshchuk.
