Dentist names number one mistake in brushing teeth that could lead to their loss
Excessive and aggressive brushing can damage the delicate gum tissue and lead to tooth loss, according to dentist Andrej Bozic and the Daily Express.
Why you shouldn't brush your teeth too frequently or vigorously
Brushing your teeth too often can cause the gums to recede, exposing sensitive tooth roots that are prone to decay and discomfort. Gum recession often progresses unnoticed until significant damage occurs.
This is usually caused by abrasive brushing habits, which can lead to bacterial infections and gum diseases.
If ignored, this problem can worsen, eventually leading to tooth loss.
Tips for brushing your teeth
Dr. Bozic offers essential advice for maintaining good oral hygiene. He recommends using a toothbrush with soft bristles.
"It is gentle on the gums yet effective at cleaning teeth without causing abrasion. Brushing should not be an aggressive action. Use light pressure and let the bristles do the work. If you notice the bristles splaying out after a short period, you're likely brushing too hard," he said.
Keep the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gums and use short, circular motions. Avoid back-and-forth movements that can irritate and damage the gums.
The dentist also emphasized that brushing for the recommended two minutes twice a day is sufficient to keep your teeth clean.
Replace your toothbrush every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles become worn.
A worn-out toothbrush is not only ineffective but can also cause further damage to your gums.
Using an antimicrobial mouth rinse also helps reduce bacteria and plaque, keeping the gums healthy.
Regular check-ups and cleanings are crucial for early detection and resolution of any issues.
