Denmark to tighten control over tankers amid Russian shadow fleet threat

Denmark has decided to step up inspections of tankers due to the increased activity of aging vessels transporting oil through the Danish straits. The decision comes amid threats posed by Russia’s shadow fleet, which consists of over 650 vessels, according to the Danish Maritime Authority.
As noted by the agency, this decision was made in response to the "activity of aging vessels transporting oil through the Danish straits."
"Port state control is focused on tankers, as an accident involving damage or an incident with a tanker ship could have particularly far-reaching consequences for safety, health, and the environment," the statement reads.
Shadow fleet
Earlier, it was reported that the Russian Federation created its own "shadow fleet" following introducing the price cap on Russian oil. This allows Russia to bypass sanctions.
Ukrainian intelligence has determined that the shadow fleet comprises approximately 1,000 aging tankers. These vessels ensure the export of about 70% of Russia’s crude oil and petroleum products.
More details on how Russia created its shadow fleet can be found in RBC-Ukraine’s report.
