Denmark supports presidential bill on NABU - Zelenskyy

The bill on the independence of NABU and SAPO has received support from Denmark, which currently holds the presidency of the Council of the European Union, stated Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
According to him, he held a phone conversation with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. The President of Ukraine thanked her for Denmark’s tangible and strong support, which is helping to strengthen the country’s defense capabilities.
One of the key topics of the conversation was Ukraine’s European integration. In particular, Zelenskyy and Frederiksen discussed the opening of the first negotiation cluster.
"Denmark currently holds the Presidency of the Council of the EU. We must make the most of this time to implement all the necessary decisions," the President said.
He assured that Ukraine is doing everything on its part to fulfill its commitments to the EU. In particular, a draft law that guarantees the independence of anti-corruption institutions was registered in the Verkhovna Rada.
"I’m grateful to Denmark for its support. We agreed that the parliament must vote on this bill without delay – already this week," Zelenskyy emphasized.
Zelenskyy and Frederiksen also agreed to maintain future contacts, both bilaterally and within broader international formats.
EU criticism
Last week, the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian Parliament - ed.) curtailed the powers of NABU and SAPO by passing a controversial law.
The European Union criticized this decision by the Ukrainian Parliament. Notably, EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos emphasized that it was a serious step back.
At the same time, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, citing sources, reported that the EU threatened to suspend financial aid to Ukraine over the law.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has decided to rectify the situation by submitting his draft law, which ensures the independence of NABU and SAPO.
