Democrats are laying the groundwork for an investigation into a diesel fuel deal between the US and Russia. Banks and port authorities have received letters with demands, according to Axios.

Democrats prepare investigation

Representatives of the US Democratic Party are preparing an investigation into agreements between US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin regarding the import of Russian diesel fuel.

They have sent letters to the largest US banks and port authorities demanding the preservation of all documents related to potential supplies, Axios reports.

Who received the letters?

The letters were received by:

  • JPMorgan;
  • Bank of America;
  • Citi;
  • Wells Fargo;
  • Goldman Sachs;
  • Morgan Stanley.

Among the addressees are the port authorities of Houston, Beaumont, and Corpus Christi in Texas, as well as the ports of New York and New Jersey, the publication writes.

What are the demands?

Politicians have urged companies not to facilitate:

  • The purchase;
  • Transportation;
  • Import;
  • Unloading;
  • Storage;
  • Financing;
  • Distribution of Russian diesel fuel within the US.

They are also asking them not to participate in the supply of such fuel to other markets, Axios reported.

Elections in the US

The US midterm elections to Congress will take place on November 3, 2026. If the Democrats win, they will be able to chair influential committees on international relations, banking, finance, and judicial matters.

According to Axios, investigating the Trump administration's deals with Russia could become one of the Democrats' top priorities in the event of electoral success.

Russia is ready to supply any volume of diesel fuel for export, as stated by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak.

Furthermore, Trump and Putin agreed on the supply of Russian diesel to global and American markets.

Under this agreement, the US Department of the Treasury issued a temporary license suspending certain sanctions and allowing Russia to begin export shipments.
