Democratic presidential candidate to be chosen by August 7 - NYT
The Democratic Party will select its presidential candidate by August 7 via online voting, The New York Times reports.
According to Jamie Harrison, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, no date has been set for the vote.
Party representatives who took part in the phone conversation also said that a candidate for vice president could also be nominated by August 7. At the same time, the presidential candidate, who is likely the current Vice President Kamala Harris, will have the right to influence when the vice presidential candidate is selected and voted on by the delegates.
The NYT adds that the presidential candidate's nomination in the virtual vote will take place a few weeks before the delegates gather in Chicago on August 19. This, in turn, will reduce the convention to a purely ceremonial function.
