Deadly Russian attack kills 17 — Zelenskyy urges allies to speed up air defense

How many people were injured

As of now, 44 people are known to have been injured in the attack. Another 17 people were killed.

The president said the strike was heavy. Russia used:

• 24 ballistic missiles;
• four Zircon and Onyx missiles;
• 115 drones, many of them jet-powered.

What did Russia target

According to Zelenskyy, the main targets of the attack were warehouses belonging to civilian businesses. Russia also targeted infrastructure and a railway station.

Among the facilities hit that had nothing to do with the war were a brewery, construction-material warehouses and civilian logistics facilities.

What could help save lives

Zelenskyy said ballistic missile interceptors could have saved the lives of those who were killed. He urged Ukraine's partners to understand that delays in supplying interceptors or an unwillingness to provide anti-ballistic missile systems lead directly to such horrific casualties and destruction.

Partners that are not ready to step up their assistance with interceptor supplies can support Ukraine through new sanctions, the president said. According to Zelenskyy, a significant portion of Russia's ballistic missile production facilities are still not under sanctions.

Zelenskyy called on the G7, the European Union and everyone committed to protecting human life to adopt new sanctions measures.

Aftermath of the August 5 attack on Kyiv and the region

Meanwhile, fires broke out in Kyiv following the strike, affecting residential buildings, warehouses and an office building.

Several sites caught fire immediately after the attack.

As RBC-Ukraine reported, the death toll in the Kyiv region rose to 14, while the number of injured reached nearly 30.

Rescuers continued clearing the rubble.

Eight people were killed on a railway platform in the Brovary district. They did not make it onto their final train.
