Czechia proposes new EU-backed initiative to supply ammunition to Ukraine
Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský stated that Czechia is considering the possibility of creating a new initiative for Ukraine to purchase ammunition. The country is calling on other EU members to join.
This would be the second Czech initiative to purchase artillery shells for the Ukrainian army.
"It is a matter of political will, and if many EU member states once again join our initiative, we can achieve a lot for Ukraine," said the head of the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
He added that options for financing the new initiative are currently being considered.
"Right now, we are looking at how we can finance the new ammunition initiative, and then we will see how many shells we can obtain for that money," the minister stated.
Ammunition from Czechia
As a reminder, last year, Czechia launched an initiative to purchase ammunition for the Ukrainian army from third countries. Other nations also joined the project. This was intended to help address the problem of shell shortages.
In June, Czechia announced that the first batch of artillery ammunition purchased under its initiative had arrived in Ukraine.
According to Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala, Ukraine is expected to receive approximately 500,000 shells by the end of 2024.
