Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković openly accused President Zoran Milanović of prioritizing Kremlin interests over those of his own country. The clash erupted over Milanović’s pro-Russian stance amid the ongoing war in Ukraine, according to Večernji list.

Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković sharply criticized President Zoran Milanović following his remarks about the lack of dialogue between Western leaders and Russia.

Milanović had claimed that there was no justification for avoiding communication with Moscow, prompting a strong reaction from the head of government.

Plenković expressed bewilderment over why anyone would show understanding toward Vladimir Putin, who has been waging war against Ukraine for over three years. He stressed that there could be no room for empathy or justification in the words of someone representing Croatia's official stance when it comes to Putin and Russia.

The prime minister accused Milanović of consistently siding with the Kremlin more than with Croatia, the West, or its allies over the past three years. He called this behavior a dangerous norm that has been allowed to go unchecked.

Plenković also pointed to polling data showing a divided Croatian public opinion, with a notable segment expressing support for Russia, something he described as a disgrace for the country’s political landscape.

The dispute unfolds against the backdrop of Milanović’s presidency, which has been marked by a pro-Russian stance and controversial views on the war in Ukraine. The clash underscores a deep rift in Croatia’s domestic politics and its position on the international stage.

Previously, Croatia had refused to send troops to Ukraine.

Milanović maintains that without a peace agreement and Russia's consent, any military mission would be "dangerous and irresponsible." He emphasized that while Croatia will continue providing humanitarian aid to Ukraine, it will not take part in combat operations.
