US Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged an end to the fighting in Ukraine during a phone call with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, CNN reports.

Rubio spoke with Lavrov on April 27 to discuss "next steps in the Russia-Ukraine peace talks," the State Department said on Monday.

Rubio emphasized "the need to end the war now."

Rubio told Lavrov during the call that the United States is committed to helping end this senseless war.

Peace plan for Ukraine

Reuters recently revealed former President Donald Trump's proposed plan for resolving the war in Ukraine. Shortly afterward, Ukraine and its European partners also presented their peace proposal.

At the same time, President Trump criticized a New York Times journalist for an article suggesting that Ukraine should reclaim all its territories, including Crimea. Trump said that the author of the article was acting on the instructions of the editor, voicing demands for Ukrainian territories in his publication.

Earlier today, Lavrov outlined Moscow’s conditions for a settlement with Ukraine, demanding Ukraine's neutral status and the recognition of the occupied territories.
