Coffee can influence not only your energy but also the condition of your skin. The drink may reduce breakouts, but excessive consumption can be harmful.

RBC-Ukraine reports how much coffee you can drink in a day without harming your health.

Benefits of coffee for skin

According to Ukrainian cosmetologist Daria Tishchenko, coffee, specifically caffeine, can have both positive and negative effects on the skin.

Positive aspects include the antioxidants in caffeine, which protect skin cells from damage and help maintain a youthful appearance.

Caffeine also has anti-inflammatory properties and can help reduce redness and puffiness, especially around the eyes.

How it can harm

The expert noted that caffeine can negatively affect skin prone to acne. Excessive consumption can also increase stress levels, which can contribute to breakouts.

Drinking low-quality coffee can disrupt the gut microbiome, leading to inflammation in the body, which may manifest on the skin as rashes, redness, and peeling.

Moderate coffee consumption, such as 1-2 cups per day, can be part of a healthy lifestyle and even bring benefits. Therefore, it’s important to follow the recommended limits.

It’s also crucial to pay attention to how your body reacts and adjust your intake accordingly.

Who should avoid coffee

Dietitian Kelli McGrane explained that since caffeine in coffee can cause a temporary increase in blood pressure and heart rate, those with existing heart conditions should avoid this drink.

Pregnant women are advised to limit caffeine intake to 200 milligrams per day to minimize the risk of miscarriage and preterm birth.

Also, caffeine is a stimulant that can heighten anxiety in some people. If you regularly experience anxiety or panic attacks, you may want to avoid or reduce your coffee consumption.

For some, a morning cup of coffee triggers bowel movements, but this effect is undesirable for those dealing with diarrhea. Decaffeinated coffee may be less problematic, although hot liquids generally stimulate bowel function.
