Ukrainians over the age of 60 are now allowed to sign a contract with the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This is only possible on a voluntary basis, according to Member of Parliament Roman Kostenko on Facebook.

"The law grants individuals aged 60 and over the right to voluntarily sign a contract for military service," Kostenko explained.

According to him, this will allow experienced specialists to assist in non-combat and specialized roles.

"There is no coercion — only motivated, professional volunteers," the MP clarified.

At the same time, according to the text of the law, those who wish to sign a contract must be in appropriate health and undergo the required medical examination.

Two more defense-related laws

Kostenko also clarified that the Verkhovna Rada passed Law No. 13353, which officially establishes the name of the A Special Operations Center (Alpha) and sets the unit’s personnel strength at 10,000.

Another law adopted by parliament concerns restoring fairness for instructors at higher military education institutions. Unlike instructors at training centers, they had not been receiving additional pay.

Such instructors at military universities were often veterans and wounded servicemen. The law provides them with an incentive to help train the future officer corps.

The draft law allowing people over 60 to sign a contract was passed in its first reading by the Rada (the parliament of Ukraine) on June 4.
