A daily cup of coffee has long been a symbol of energy. As it turns out, this drink can affect life expectancy — if you do not exceed the daily limit, according to Ukrainian cardiologist Nataliia Todurova.

When coffee has a positive effect

According to the doctor, coffee improves reaction speed and concentration. It also contains antioxidants — polyphenols, which reduce inflammation and protect cells in the body.

In general, 2–4 cups of coffee per day may even reduce the risk of stroke, type 2 diabetes, dementia, and can even extend your lifespan.

However, drinking more than 5–6 cups per day can lead to increased blood pressure, dehydration, and poorer sleep.

In addition, lack of sleep due to caffeine can lead to faster aging of the brain and blood vessels.

"In sensitive individuals, excessive coffee consumption can lead to increased anxiety, heart rate, and even arrhythmia. Coffee with syrups or added sugar can contribute to cellular aging. Therefore, I can say that coffee can be your anti-aging drink, but only if consumed in moderation," the cardiologist added.

Who should not drink coffee

People with cardiovascular conditions

According to Mayo Clinic, it is worth limiting or completely avoiding coffee in cases of:

  • arterial hypertension (especially uncontrolled)
  • arrhythmias
  • coronary heart disease

The main reason is that caffeine can increase heart rate and blood pressure.

Sleep disorders and anxiety

Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system, so it can:

  • worsen insomnia
  • cause anxiety
  • trigger tremors and nervousness

Gastrointestinal conditions

Coffee can increase acidity and irritate the mucous membrane. Therefore, limit or avoid it in cases of:

  • peptic ulcer disease
  • gastroesophageal reflux (heartburn)
  • irritable bowel syndrome
