European officials believe that discussing Greenland at the Coalition of the Willing summit could anger the US. As a result, they plan to avoid the issue in order not to derail the Ukraine peace process, according to Politico.
An Élysée official said the Coalition of the Willing meeting aims to deepen alignment among Ukraine, the EU, and the US on ending the war. He stressed that US involvement in this process is crucial.
The EU official argued that "any attempt to shift the focus onto Greenland risked stoking Trump's ire."
There was no mention of the US President's statements about Greenland during the Élysée Palace briefing.
"Europeans are desperate to avoid derailing the process" on Ukraine, especially after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently said a deal is 90 percent ready.
Therefore, "keeping Greenland to one side may suit representatives of many countries."
US statements on Greenland
The wife of US President Donald Trump's domestic security adviser, Stephen Miller, Kathy, recently posted a map showing Greenland colored like the American flag.
After that, Trump said the US needs the island for defense, claiming it is allegedly surrounded by Russian and Chinese fleets.
Sources cited by Politico believe the US could establish control over Greenland in the coming months.
Denmark has already responded to Trump's remarks. In particular, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that if the US attempted to seize Greenland—especially by military means - it would effectively spell the end of NATO.
On January 6, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that the issue of Greenland will be discussed at the Coalition of the Willing summit. He stressed that no NATO member should attack or threaten another member of the Alliance.
