The US could potentially take control of Greenland as early as 2026. This could happen before key dates, Politico reports.

Unnamed experts and officials told the outlet that the US could "seek to exploit a window of opportunity" in the coming months to establish control over Greenland.

In their view, such a move could take place ahead of the US midterm elections on November 3 and before the 250th anniversary of American independence on July 4.

Controversial US plans for Greenland

A few weeks ago, US President Donald Trump appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as "special envoy for Greenland."

Landry himself stated that he wants to make Greenland part of the United States.

In response, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said that the appointment confirms US interest in Greenland.

On January 4, Trump once again stated that the US "absolutely needs" Greenland, justifying it by claiming that the island is "surrounded" by Russian and Chinese fleets and that it is needed by the US for defense against its rivals.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, commenting on the statement, emphasized that the US has no right to annex Greenland. She called on the US to stop threatening Denmark and its people, who have made it very clear that they are not for sale.

Trump’s statements regarding Greenland came immediately after US forces conducted an operation in Venezuela and captured dictator Nicolás Maduro.
