Today on the evening of August 9th, Russian occupiers launched a missile strike on a residential area in Zaporizhzhia. A church was destroyed, shops and buildings were damaged. There are confirmed reports of 2 fatalities and at least 7 people injured.

RBC-Ukraine has compiled all the information available about the situation in Zaporizhzhia after the shelling.

Attack on residential quarter in Zaporizhzhia

An explosion occurred in the Shevchenko district of Zaporizhzhia during an air alarm that started at 19:40.

Shortly after, Yurii Malashko, the head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional State Administration, informed on Telegram that the Russians struck the Shevchenko district with "precision weaponry," resulting in damage to a church and commercial establishments, as well as shattered windows in apartment buildings.

After the shelling, a fire started. A children's playground was destroyed. Anatolii Kurtiev, the secretary of the Zaporizhzhia City Council, stated that windows were blown out in five multi-story buildings and three educational institutions.

Information about the victims
Currently, there is information about 2 fatalities and 7 injured as a result of the strike on the city. The data about the victims has been clarified by the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Earlier, the head of the regional state administration, Malashko, reported 3 fatalities, including two elderly women and an elderly man.

However, according to law enforcement information, one person was successfully resuscitated. Paramedics from the police assisted the medical personnel.

Another 7 people sustained injuries, all of them are in the hospital. Three of the injured are in serious condition, while the others have moderate injuries.

Possibly hit by Iskander

According to preliminary information, the occupants attacked Zaporizhzhia with an Iskander missile. The exact type of missile is still being determined. Andriy Yermak, the head of the President's Office, reported this and added that the attack damaged a church of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU). He posted photos of the destroyed church and a supermarket.

"Russian missile strike on Zaporizhzhia. The type of missile is being determined - the preliminary assessment is Iskander. The strike was aimed at the territory of the church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul of the OCU," Yermak informed.

Zelenskyy's reaction
The President of Ukraine referred to the attack on Zaporizhzhia as a war crime, for which Russian occupiers will receive a response on the frontline. Volodymyr Zelenskyy posted a video from the scene of the incident, showing a fire on the territory of the church.
"And this war crime of Russia will certainly face its sentence. And the response to Russian terrorists will be on the frontline - thanks to our heroic warriors," emphasized Zelenskyy.
