China responds swiftly to new EU sanctions on Russia

China imposes sanctions on the EU
China introduced its own sanctions against the European Union after the EU adopted its 21st package of sanctions against Russia.
A notice on the website of China's Ministry of Commerce announced the inclusion of 14 entities from the European Union in the export control list.
Under the new measures, exporters are prohibited from supplying the listed entities with:
- dual-use goods,
- Chinese-made dual-use goods through any foreign organizations or individuals.
All ongoing related activities must be stopped immediately. The measures took effect on the day they were published.
However, an exception is allowed if an export is deemed genuinely necessary. In such cases, the exporter must apply for approval from China's Ministry of Commerce.
Which companies were sanctioned
The sanctions list includes:
- three German companies: Sindlhauser Materials GmbH, Rheinmetall AG, and Antraco Chemie-Handelsgesellschaft;
- three French companies: InPACT S.A., III-V LAB, and Cavok UAS;
- two Italian companies: Lafert Group and Garnet S.r.l.;
- two Polish entities: Vigo Photonics S.A. and Wrocław University of Science and Technology (Politechnika Wrocławska);
- Dutch company IHC Merwede Holding B.V.;
- Czech company TATRA TRUCKS;
- Bulgarian company Opticoelectron Group;
- Lithuanian company Ekspla UAB.
What are dual-use goods?
The restricted dual-use items include:
- software and technologies;
- certain rare earth materials used in the production of drones and chips.
As previously reported, the EU's latest sanctions package targeted, among others, 14 companies from mainland China and Hong Kong accused of supporting Russia's defense industry.
Ukraine has already begun work on the EU's proposed 22nd sanctions package against Russia, which is expected to include evidence of the abduction of Ukrainian children.
