China reports 'candid, fruitful' talks between Sullivan and Wang Yi
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a candid, substantive, and fruitful strategic communication with U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan. The talks were aimed at further fulfilling the promise of the leaders of China and the United States to engage in dialogue, states Reuters.
According to representatives of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, during their meeting in Bangkok on Friday and Saturday, they agreed to properly address important and sensitive issues in relations between the United States and China.
At the same time, Chinese leader Xi Jinping and U.S. President Joe Biden should "maintain regular contact to provide strategic guidance for bilateral relations ... and make good use of the current strategic communication channels."
Background
Last year, the leaders of the United States and China agreed to resume relations, which had been in limbo for most of 2023.
In early January, representatives of the U.S. and Chinese defense departments resumed talks on policy coordination at the Pentagon, and on January 10, Deputy National Security Advisor Jon Finer met with senior diplomat Liu Jianchao for "candid and constructive discussions."
Recently, foreign media reported that U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan would hold a private meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to stabilize relations between the two countries.
