China has pledged to strengthen its support for the Russian Federation (RF) amid threats from US President Donald Trump to impose tariffs on Moscow's trading partners, according to The Telegraph.

Following a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Chinese leader Xi Jinping stated the need for Moscow and Beijing to "strengthen mutual support on multilateral forums." He noted that trust between China and Russia has "deepened" and that both countries are "setting a model for a new type of international relations."

According to The Telegraph, citing leaked information from a meeting with European Union (EU) representatives, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi reportedly said that Beijing would not allow Moscow to lose the war, as Washington might then shift its focus to China.

US efforts to stop the war in Ukraine

The United States has recently intensified its diplomatic efforts to stop the full-scale war in Ukraine. American officials held a series of separate negotiations with representatives of both Ukraine and Russia. During one of the rounds, Washington proposed a full ceasefire — Ukraine supported the initiative, while the Russian side put forward counter-demands. Despite this, Kyiv and Moscow resumed direct dialogue and have already held several rounds of talks.

Since Donald Trump returned to the White House for a second term, his rhetoric toward Russia has shifted significantly. On July 14, he expressed dissatisfaction with the actions of dictator Vladimir Putin, warned of possible new sanctions against Russia, and announced the delivery of additional Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine.

Meanwhile, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte called on Brazil, China, and India to pressure the Kremlin and persuade Putin to agree to a truce if they wish to avoid sanctions.
