China has stated that since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, it has supported peace negotiations and claims it is making efforts to stop the war, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated during the briefing.

"From the very beginning of the 'Ukraine crisis,' China has sought to promote peace talks, and China’s efforts to end hostilities are obvious to all countries," she said.

Beijing was responding to remarks by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy about the lack of Chinese involvement in efforts to end the war.

In addition, Mao Ning recalled the position of Chinese leader Xi Jinping on resolving the conflict. According to her, his four principles include "respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states," adherence to the UN Charter, consideration of countries’ security concerns, and support for a peaceful settlement.

"This has always been China’s position," she emphasized.

Background

On Monday, March 2, Zelenskyy said it is important for Ukraine to involve China in ending the war, as Beijing plays a key role in supplying Russia with weapons and dual-use components.

"I think it is within their power. In any case, regarding the supply of certain types of weapons, dual-use goods and so on — the Chinese leader can influence all of this. For us, their participation would definitely not be a bad thing. So far, we do not see their involvement," the Ukrainian president said.

China’s support for Russia

Recently, former head of Britain’s MI6, Richard Moore, stated that Beijing has provided Moscow with its most significant support during the war. According to him, Russia continues its war effort largely thanks to China.

In addition, analysts at the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) recently reported that China is helping Russia ramp up drone production, which Moscow uses for strikes against Ukraine.

It is worth noting that in December last year, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Beijing is not interested in ending Russia's war against Ukraine.
