China has condemned US interest in Greenland and called on Washington not to use other countries to achieve its own goals, The Guardian reports.

As the publication writes, somewhat unexpectedly, China criticized the United States for its interest in Greenland, urging it not to use other countries as a pretext to pursue its own interests.

"The Arctic concerns the overall interests of the international community," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning.

She noted that China's activities in the Arctic are aimed at promoting peace, stability, and sustainable development in the region.

Mao also called for respect for the rights and freedoms of all countries to conduct legitimate activities in the Arctic.

Trump's statements on Greenland

Earlier, US President Donald Trump repeatedly stated publicly his intention to assert control over Greenland.

After successful US actions in Venezuela, he again returned to the topic of the island, stressing that the United States "absolutely" needs this Danish territory, as it is allegedly surrounded by Russian and Chinese ships.

In a new statement, the White House chief said Greenland should agree to a deal with the United States, as its defense consists of just "two dog sleds."

He also emphasized that in the absence of US control, Greenland could come under the influence of Russia or China.
