Europe and NATO will have to coordinate the points of the US peace plan on Ukraine that directly concern them, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said during a speech in the House of Commons.
Starmer emphasized that any agreement to end Russia’s war against Ukraine must be fair and durable.
According to him, progress has been made on the updated peace framework during talks between the Ukrainian and US delegations in Geneva.
"I can reassure the House that work is ongoing to refine this plan," the Prime Minister added.
Starmer also stressed that a fair and lasting peace is possible only if certain conditions are met:
-
Ukraine’s sovereignty must be preserved;
-
Ukraine must have the ability to defend itself in the future;
-
Matters concerning Ukraine and its future must be determined by Ukraine;
-
Elements affecting Europe and NATO must have the consent of European countries and NATO members.
He added that there is "still a long way to go and a tough road ahead."
Merz’s conditions
Earlier, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized that Russia’s war against Ukraine can end only if the conditions are acceptable both to Kyiv and to Europe.
The German government head noted that the terms on which the war concludes will have consequences for the security of European countries.
The 28-point US peace plan, which was leaked to the media, included provisions that Ukraine would not be able to join NATO.
Ukraine would also need to "secure a neutral status."
